Titan America Wins Industry Award for Low Carbon Concrete Project at Marine Terminal in Chesapeake

The project, which took place from 2023 – 2024, utilized RCC’s Type IT cement in the concrete mix, which provides a carbon impact reduction of more than 20% from ordinary portland cement.

"Norfapeake" Terminal, a marine terminal operated as an affiliate of Titan America / Roanoke Cement in Chesapeake, VA.

The Norfapeake marine terminal in Chesapeake was recently enhanced with a cement storage dome capable of housing approximately 70,000 tonnes of cement, as well as increased trucking and rail capacity to meet the demand for its low-carbon cements. TVRM and RCC used this major investment as an opportunity to prove out the latest cement technology at scale and under harsh conditions. The performance of Type IT cement was crucial because the terminal abuts the brackish water of the Elizabeth River and is subject to freezing and thawing cycles and receives de-icing salts throughout the winter to maintain the 24/7 load out traffic.

The specific concrete mix not only utilized Type IT low-carbon cement, a ternary blended cement with up to 24% less embodied carbon, but also incorporated additional Titan-branded ProAsh® fly ash at the batching stage, which provides further improved workability, durability, and CO2 reduction associated with Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs). TVRM utilizes AI-supported mix formulation techniques that drive further improvements in concrete performance.

RCC continues to make investments in next generation cementitious materials. In 2024, RCC was awarded a $61.7 million grant from the US Department of Energy to build a first-of-its-kind calcined clay product line. The project will enable the production of limestone calcined-clay cement, (LC3), a high-performance, low-carbon product made with domestically available raw material.
