What Happened?
Shares of materials and photonics company Coherent (NYSE:COHR) jumped 10.5% in the afternoon session after Bernstein rated the company Outperform with a $350 price target, pointing to optical-module upside as data-center switches move to higher speeds. According to Streetinsider, the firm framed $350 as about 24% upside, valuing the stock at 22× estimated 2028 EPS of $16, and argued optical-module demand should keep expanding with faster networking gear. Bullish AI-infrastructure read-across was reinforced by Citi commentary tagging Coherent as an AI hardware beneficiary, plus investor focus on Coherent’s PhotonLink optics platform and AI security demo amid a broader bid in networking names.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Coherent’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 84 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Coherent and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 2 days ago when the stock gained 5.2% on the news that it successfully demonstrated scalable physical-layer security for artificial intelligence infrastructure developed alongside CUbIQ Technologies. According to TipRanks, the demonstration presented physical-layer security designed for AI infrastructure. Beyond the work with CUbIQ Technologies, investor interest was also driven by renewed optimism around Coherent’s PhotonLink optics platform following a pullback that occurred after its launch at ECOC 2026. A security proof point tied to AI networking can reinforce confidence in Coherent’s broader optics opportunity after the post-launch dig.
Coherent is up 63.1% since the beginning of the year, but at $317.01 per share, it is still trading 25.7% below its 52-week high of $426.89 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Coherent’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $5,232.
